Why is prayer important?

We believe prayer plays an indispensable role in our lives. As born again Christian's, we cannot live without communicating with our father in heaven. If you claim to be a Christian and yet devoid of a prayer life, then I question your supposed faith in Christ? Prayerlessness is not a trait of a true follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. If Jesus who was God manifested in the flesh, thought it worth while to pray during his earthly ministry, then it behooves us to do likewise. But the question is, why should we pray? or Why is prayer important? Let us look at some of the reasons why prayer is very important. 

I beseech you by the mercies of God to carefully read through this article for your spiritual edification.

Prayer is important, because it is a way of serving God. The bible says: And there was a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years and had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers  (Luke 2:36-37). Anna was serving the Lord with fasting and prayers. This tells us that prayer in itself is a form of serving God wholeheartedly.

Prayer helps us to build a strong relationship with God. When we pray, we are communing with God and this act strengthens our intimacy with him. Having a prayer life will not only help you to draw nigh to God even more, but it also strengthens your relationship with him.

Through prayer, we present our requests before God. Prayer is the means we pour out our emotions, our thoughts and our heartfelt desires before him. The bible says: Don't worry about anything; on the contrary, make your requests known to God by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving. - Philippians 4:6. For example, if you want to take an important decision, or you want God to come through for you in something, instead of being anxious, the bible encourages us to present our petitions before God.

Another reason why prayer is important is because, when we pray, we are fulfilling a scriptural command. The bible is filled with commands for believers to pray. Prayer is God's will for us, to wit, it behooves us to align ourselves with his will by developing a prayer life. We are actually obeying God when we pray, because it is He who has bidden us in his infallible word to pray, see (1 Thessalonians 5; 17, Colossians 4; 2, James 5; 16).

Prayer is important, because it makes us Christ-like. When you check throughout the gospels, you will realize that the Man Jesus Christ was a prayerful person, see (Matthew 14; 23, Mark 1; 35, Luke 9; 28). If Jesus who was God-incarnate prioritized prayer, then we should do the same. Because Jesus prayed, when we also pray, we become more and more like him. Prayer as the saying goes, "does not change God, but it changes us". Prayer is part of our sanctification, the process by which we grow to become more and more like Jesus.

Prayer is important because it is the means by which we call on God to intervene in any given situation. When apostle Peter was arrested and bound in prison, the church cried out to God in prayer and he hearkened to the voice of their supplication, and Peter was supernaturally delivered from prison, see (Acts 12; 1-11). In any given situation, prayer is the only way we can cry out to God to come to our aid.

The last reason is that, prayer reveals our trust and dependency on God. Prayerlessness reveals a lack of trust and dependency on God. When we pray, it shows our trust and reliance on God, for we know we cannot, but he can. The psalmist said: I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth (Psalms 121: 1-2). The prayer of the psalmist reveals the heart of one who completely depends on God. Any time we pray, we are acknowledging the fact that it is not by might nor by power, but by his Spirit. Our prayer demonstrates our trust and dependency on God. God bless you

If Jesus was God, then why did he pray to God?

Brethren, because Jesus prayed whiles on earth, many people have used that as an occasion to deny his Deity. Their reasoning is that if Jesus is God, then there was no point for him to pray.
